MEMS Accelerometers for Geotechnical & Structural Monitoring

mems accelerometers

For engineers tasked with monitoring slopes, tunnels, or foundations, vibration data only matters if it holds up under real-world conditions. That's why Kingmach focuses on MEMS accelerometers that combine the noise performance and stability needed for long-term geotechnical deployment. Instead of starting with a one-size-fits-all sensor, we offer a range of configurations — from low-g tilt sensing to mid-range vibration — and match the housing, cable, and output to your site’s requirements. Whether you're tracking subtle movements in a deep excavation or capturing dynamic response during seismic events, our MEMS accelerometers are designed to deliver repeatable measurements without constant recalibration. And because no two projects are identical, we work with you to adapt the sensor specifications, so you're not forced to compromise on range, bandwidth, or physical footprint.

Technical Detail

Configured around process stability, mold life, and long-term uptime.

Kingmach manufactures MEMS accelerometers specifically for geotechnical and structural health monitoring applications. Rather than offering a generic sensor, we design our units around the needs of long-term, unattended field installations. Each accelerometer uses a low-noise MEMS element paired with carefully designed signal conditioning, which helps maintain data quality even with long cable runs or fluctuating temperatures. Typical uses include tracking slope movement, monitoring vibration in tunnels and shafts, assessing structural response on bridges and buildings, and capturing seismic data for dam safety. We provide both single-axis and triaxial versions, with measurement ranges configurable to your project requirements. Off-the-shelf models cover the most common monitoring tasks, but we also customize full-scale range, bandwidth, and output format when needed. Housings are available in weather-resistant materials for outdoor and buried use, and all sensors go through multi-point calibration before leaving our facility. Our team supports you with selection, deployment advice, and troubleshooting. Through our distribution partners, we deliver Kingmach sensors and service to project sites worldwide.

FAQ

Common technical questions

How do MEMS accelerometers compare to traditional geophones for geotechnical monitoring?

MEMS sensors tend to have better low-frequency response and lower distortion at small amplitudes, which makes them well suited for slow, subtle movements like slope creep or settlement. They are also typically smaller and easier to install in tight spaces. Geophones, on the other hand, may offer higher sensitivity for certain seismic surveys but often require careful coupling and are more sensitive to tilt. Kingmach can help you choose based on your specific measurement goals.

Can Kingmach MEMS accelerometers be used in high-humidity or buried environments?

Yes. We offer housings with appropriate ingress protection for direct burial and prolonged exposure to moisture. The electronics are sealed and, when combined with our recommended cabling and sealing practices, the sensors have been deployed in challenging conditions from tropical slopes to sub-arctic permafrost. If you have a particularly aggressive environment, we can discuss additional protective measures or alternative materials.

What output signals are available, and can they work with my existing data logger?

Standard models output an analog voltage proportional to acceleration (often ±2V or ±5V full scale), which is compatible with most industrial data loggers and monitoring systems. Digital outputs (like RS-485 or CAN bus) are also available for some configurations. We can match the output to your existing equipment; just let us know your logger’s input specifications during the inquiry stage.

How often do MEMS accelerometers need recalibration, and do you provide this service?

Under normal operational conditions, our MEMS accelerometers maintain their calibrated accuracy for years. However, we recommend annual verification if the sensor is used in a critical application or harsh environment. Kingmach offers both in-house recalibration services and on-site checks using portable shakers. Each sensor ships with a calibration sheet, and we can issue new certificates upon recalibration.

Do you supply mounting accessories or just the sensors?

We supply a range of mounting brackets, magnetic bases, and groutable anchors to simplify installation. For permanent monitoring, we often recommend stainless-steel brackets that can be bolted or epoxied to the structure. Our application engineers can suggest the most suitable mounting method based on your structure's material and the vibration range of interest.
